Listed Building: TANGIER PUBLIC HOUSE (1387233)

Public house. c1912. By AE Cogswell. Glazed brick in stretcher bond, dark green to ground floor and pale green to first floor, faience mouldings and dressings. Welsh slated steep pitched roof, hipped over splayed corners. Brick stack with moulded stone cap at far left, centre, and far right. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, 5 bays. Tangier road facade has on far left a half glazed door with 2 moulded lower panels, patterned etched glass to upper panels with lettering 'Saloon Bar', overlight with leaded lights set under fascia. Flanking pilasters with brown faience capital and necking. At centre is a similar 2-leaf door with overlight and flanking pilasters, etched glass to upper panels with lettering `Bottle and Jug'. To left and right are 2 round-headed pub casements with patterned etched glass each set under dark green glazed brick round arch with brown faience label, imposts, and sillband. Lettering on glass `Saloon' to left windows and 'Public Bar' to right. Green faience fascia with applied gold lettering 'Spirits. Portsmouth United Ales and Stouts', brown faience cornice. At each end of fascia and to angles of splayed corner is a gold faience sculpture with central Acanthus leaf motif; Ionic volutes and scrolled sides. First floor has 5 sashes each set under dark green glazed brick arch. At far left return is a brick gable with stone coped parapet. At far right the corner with Chesterfield Road is splayed with flanking pilasters similar to front. At right flank within recessed porch is a similar 2-leaf door with overlight. Lettering on etched glass panels 'Public Bar'. To left flank and first floor are 2 tiled murals by Carters of Poole. The ground floor mural depicts the 'Grand Market, Tangiers' and first floor mural an arab horseman. The fascia has applied gold lettering 'The Tangier'. Right return to Chesterfield Road is similar to Tangier Road facade with 5 similar round-arched casements, etched glass and lettering. First floor has 4 similar sashes each set under segmental arch.
