Listed Building: AIR BALLOON PUBLIC HOUSE (1103832)

Public house. C1900. By AH Bone. Flint and ashlar, timber frame with stuccoed panels. Steep pitched plain tile roof with ornamental ridge piece, brick stack to left and right of centre. Neo-Tudor-Jacobean. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attic, 4 bays. To right of centre within slightly projecting third bay is a recessed 3-leaf door, each leaf has 4 small diagonal boarded lower panels, etched glass centre panel with 8-pane stained glass upper part, overlight. Doors set behind stone round arch with incised keystone, banded stone jambs with flint infills, banded cornice. To left is a 3-light wide and to right a 2-light wide stone transomed and mullioned window. Each casement has etched glass lower panel with leaded lights to upper part and over transom. At far left is a recessed door with 4 lower panels and 8 small upper panels each with diagonal boarding, overlight with leaded lights flanked by male and female terms, each supporting a heavy timber bracket and projecting pediment. Wall to sides of doors and windows and below sills is flint faced with ashlar bands. Jettied timber-framed first floor with ornamental panelling to top and bottom has a projecting third bay with 3-light timber transomed and mullioned casement. Each light has 2 unequal panes and 2-panes over transom, set under flat timber lintel with architrave, facing jettied gable with small 4-pane attic casement, projecting verge and bargeboard. To left and right at first floor is a similar 2-light wide and at far left 1-light wide transomed and mullioned casement. To far right is splayed corner entrance with a 2-leaf door and overlight, similar to main elevation set behind projecting porch with 2 ornately shaped tapering timber columns each set on stone base, moulded pedimental head panel, shaped brackets with sculptured head terminations supporting projecting timber pediment. First floor has 2-light window similar to main elevation, facing gable with projecting verge and shaped bargeboards.
