Listed Building: CHURCH OF ST PETER AND ST PAUL (1245265)

Church. Medieval. Extensive restoration, rebuilding and additions 1860-61. By GE Street. Flint with stone dressings. Plain tiled roofs with raised ridge pieces. STYLE: Early English. PLAN: 4-bay aisled nave, 2-bay chancel, north-east sacristy, vestry and choir vestry (formerly Lady Chapel). EXTERIOR: west face: at centre is a 3-light stone window with intersecting tracery, pointed arch and hoodmould, stone sill and rusticated jambs. Flanking offset buttresses each with stone pediment at top, rusticated quoins. To far left and far right is a 2-light stone window, each light with trefoil head. Right window has over the head a stone framed oculus with quatrefoil tracery. Facing stone coped gable and from centre a bellcote with sloping cedar shingled base, open timber arcading and small shingled splay footed spire. South face: aisle with, to far left and right, short offset buttresses. Projecting entrance porch to left, (west) entrance opening with splayed and stepped stone pointed arch with hoodmould and rusticated jambs; roll band impost, splayed stone plinth. Recessed behind opening is a boarded door with twice splayed head. Facing stone coped gable end finial. To left and right of porch is a narrow splayed trefoil-headed stone window, rusticated jambs and sill. Further right (east) is a 3-light stone window with geometrical tracery, pointed arch and hoodmould with dropped bosses. Facing gable. On right return of aisle is a similar 2-light window with plate tracery and rusticated jambs. Chancel has 2-light stone window with tall moulded Geometrical tracery. East face of lower roofed chancel has offset diagonal buttresses. At centre is a 3-light stone window with Geometrical tracery, hoodmould and dropped bosses. Facing stone coped gable and finial. North face: projecting vestry with angled offset buttresses has at centre a recessed boarded door under a stone roll moulded segmental arch which is set under pointed arch with hoodmould. On right is a 2-light stone Geometrical traceried window, pointed arch and hoodmould which intersects with door hoodmould. Left (east) return to vestry has on right a 2-light stone window with shouldered arch and colonnette at centre with octagonal head and base. To left of window is a projecting panel with stone coping. Over panel is a plate traceried stone oculus with recessed trefoil ribs, segmental hoodmould. To right (west) of vestry is a 3-light stone window with intersecting tracery, facing gable. Further right is a mid C20 passage connection to church hall (of no special interest). To right of connection are 2 stone trefoil headed windows similar to south face. INTERIOR: late C12 north arcade with stone columns and square scalloped capitals, chamfered pointed arches and hoodmoulds. Early C13 south arcade with very slender columns, broad moulded capitals with above each a short stone cylinder wider than the column from which spring the hollow chamfered pointed arches with hoodmoulds. Nave roof has hammer beam truss at west end and eastwards 3 king post trusses. Boarded ceilings. Aisle window have stained glass depicting biblical figures. Lean-to roof. To east is a stepped and moulded pointed chancel arch. East window has stained glass by Clayton and Bell.
