Listed Building: FOUNTAIN PUBLIC HOUSE AND ATTACHED BOUNDARY WALL AND GATE PIERS (1333459)

Public house. C1900. By AE Cogswell. Glazed brick and red brick in stretcher bond, faience mouldings and dressings. Interlocking tiled roof with moulded stone capped chimney stack at centre. EXTERIOR: 5 bays, 2 storeys. At centre is an open recess with 2 central cast-iron columns. At each side of recess is a light brown faience pilaster supporting 3 round faience arches. Canted bay window at centre with rounded corners to glazed brickwork below sill. 2-light transomed front casement with 8 upper panes and 1-light side casements, each with 6 upper panes all with leaded lights and stained glass. To left and right within recess is a 2-leaf half glazed door with etched glass, each leaf with 4 small lower panels, moulded top and middle rails to glass panel. Mullioned and transomed 16-pane overlight with leaded lights and stained glass. Left and right returns have fixed panels similar to doors and overlights. To left and right is a transomed casement each has, over transom, a round-headed 4-pane fixed casement, each pane with leaded lights and stained glass, keystone and banded sill; all set within light green glazed brick panel. Flanking each casement is a light brown faience pilaster. Brown faience entablature across front. At far left is a 1-storey entrance, (to flat over) C20 door with fanlight. 4 attached brass lanterns to front face. First floor: at centre is a recessed sash window, upper leaf with round head has 15-panes set within splayed brick jambs under gauged brick round arch. Flanking stone pilasters with banded stone cornice to each side of window. To left and right is a canted oriel window each with wide front sash, upper leaf 15 panes and narrow side sashes. Facing cornice and tented roof. Stone curved pediment with carved foliated relief below, stone panelled apron. Projecting stone arch with keystone and facing gable with moulded stone coped parapet. Oculus within gable. To left of left bay and right of right bay is a stone pilaster. To far left and far right is a sash window, each with 12-pane upper leaf set under a gauged brick round arch with keystone; moulded stone apron with swag carving. Stone entablature runs across front. Over central window is a stone panel set between pilasters with curved moulding coping and flanking consoles. Lettering within panel read `The Fountain'. Left and right brick returns to front face have facing gables and rear elevation large sash windows. INTERIOR: original interior features intact include the ornately carved wood `back fitting' with moulded baluster type supports to shelves with carved wood round arches at top and flanking pediments, 3 cast-iron fireplaces each with patterned jambs and head, moulded cornice shelf, round-headed mirror over shelf with moulded cast-iron jambs and heads. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Boundary wall on far right with entrance to yard in red brick with 2 stone capped gate piers.
