Description

6 terraced houses. c1856. Probably by Gauntlett. Stuccoed. Low pitched Welsh slate roof, brick stack to right of Nos 2, 3, 4 and 5, rendered stack to right of No.1. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys and basement, attic to Nos 1, 2 and 6, 11 bays (1 and 10 wide). Outer bays project and each is flanked on first and second floors by panelled pilasters. Rusticated ground floors with long and short quoins alternatively vermiculated and vertically incised. On far left No.1 and far right No.6 is a centre tripartite window with 4-pane central sash and narrow flanking sashes. On right No.6 has a 2-storey later extension with 6-panelled door and overlight, band cornice 4-pane sash to first floor, band cornice and coped parapet. On left of Nos 3 and 4 is a 4-panelled door and left of Nos 4 and 5 a 6-panelled door, each with overlight. On first floor Nos 2-5 each has 2 full length sashes leading to ornate cast-iron balcony running across, sashes to Nos 2, 4 and 5 6-pane and to No.3 12-pane, each with architrave and moulded cornice. Moulded band. First floor of No.1 has rectangular tripartite oriel window with 4-pane centre sash and narrow flanking and side sashes, No.6 has tripartite canted bay, 4-pane centre sash and narrow flanking sashes. Each oriel has frieze cornice and panelled apron. On second floor Nos 1-6 each has 2 sashes, Nos 1 and 5 4-pane and Nos 2, 3 and 6 6-pane, each with architrave, cornice and bracketed sill. Elongated brackets, moulded cornice, parapet with pierced panels. Left return to Clifton Road has panelled door, blinded fanlight, set under round arch with keystone, flanking pilasters.
