Scheduled Monument: Former Board of Ordnance Gunwharf, HMS Vernon (1001812)

Site Description Details: Visit Date: 19/OCT/1981 The following three buildings are the sole remains of the important Board of Ordnance Gunwharf built to supply RN ships at Portsmouth: A. Vernons Officer Block (Building No. 58). Originally Ordnance Board Offices. Circa 1770, 15 bays x 2, 2 storeyed brick building with grey headers. 3 bay pedimented centre with portland stone detailing. Interior probably altered. B. Building No. 21. Former Grand Store House, New Gun Wharf. Begun in 1812, 2 storey brick building, main range 9 bays, with pedimented centre. Originally 7 bay pedimented wings projected forward but none totally destroyed in War. Carriage arch through centre. Above this a date of 1845 - possibly referred to a later reconstruction. Interior, cast-iron columns carry wood joists. Poor condition. C. Building 47. Small unidentified storehouse. Probably early C19. Brick built 5 bays by 3, segmental windows, stone copper parapet, hipped slate roof. Former gateway to New Gun Wharf. Twin gate piers surmounted by stone mortars.
