Scheduled Monument: Fort Widley (1001862)

Description

Site Description Details: Royal Commission fort begun in 1861 and virtually complete in 1868. Hexagonal, surrounded by a ditch 50ft. Wide at bottom flanked by one double and two single caponiers in two tiers. The minor branches of the ditch flanked by musketry galleries. Chermin des rondes traversed by loop-holed buildings. Barracks in gorge with demi-bastions at the ends, battlements on roof cover parade, intricate arrangements of underground works cut into chalk which is left unrevetted.
