Description

Second World War retractable fort sited to guard Portsmouth Airfield. Circular in plan - c.6.6ft in diam. at maximum extent - and built of concrete. A hand worked hydraulic pump raised the fort into a firing position. Armed with a machine gun. When retracted, only visible as a circular concrete table on the ground. Originally 3 at this airfield. One has been destroyed and one removed to Portsmouth D-D Museum. This survivor still contains most of its mechanism, apparently in fair condition.
