Description
An archaeological evaluation was carried out by West Sussex Archaeology in November 2007 at 39-47 Claremont, ahead of the construction of a new three-storey building on the site. Three 1m wide trail trenches were excavated, which revealed that 19th century cellars and terraced houses had destroyed the majority of any surviving archaeological deposits. The only archaeological features pre-dating the 19th century terraced housing consisted of post-medieval brickearth extraction pits. The site lay within an area of archaeological potential which covers the medieval manor of Fratton. However, no evidence of medieval or post-medieval buildings was encountered during the evaluation.
