Event/Activity EPM124 - Archaeological Watching Brief at Bastion 4, Hilsea Lines

A watching brief was carried out by Southampton Archaeology Unit on the installation of a toilet and a sewage treatment plant at Bastion 4, Hilsea Lines, in 2006. The works were carried out under Scheduled Monument Consent (ref No. HSD 9/2/7673). Observations were carried out on the insertion of pipes through the structure of the monument and the machine excavation of four pipe trenches and a pit for a sewage treatment plant. The site forms part of Hilsea Lines, an 18th century rampart and moat which run along the edge of Portscreek, built to defend the northern shore of Portsea Island. It also falls within an area of archaeological potential which covers Hilsea Lines, and is of particular importance for post-medieval archaeology. The watching brief revealed evidence of 19th century brick walls, a sunken brick feature and a possible ditch of uncertain date. Accession number: 2006/682
