Event/Activity EPM125 - Archaeological Evaluation Excavation At the Site of the Proposed Dental Training Facility, Ravelin Park Campus

An archaeological evaluation excavation was carried out by Southampton Archaeology Unit on the site of the proposed Dental Training Facility in Ravelin Park in 2008. Three trenches measuring 1.5m - 2m wide with a total length of 38.85m were excavated. The modern deposits were removed by machine, and the trenches cleaned by hand. The site is located within an area of archaeological potential, defined as being of principle importance for medieval and post-medieval archaeology. The post-medieval town defences, demolished in the 1860s and 1870s, were located to the south-east of the development site, and the south-west corner may lie within the former extent of the glacis. The remains of the former town defences have been found nearby in Ravelin Park during watching briefs at the Old Student Union site EPM95 and Frewen Library EPM93. A large feature containing post-medieval material, interpreted as a possible quarry for the former defensive earthworks works, was the only archaeological feature encountered.
