Event/Activity EPM15 - Saltuing Platform

In October 1987 a storm caused the main seaward wall of the Saluting Platform to collapse. An archaeological and structural survey was subsequently carried out prior to re-building work taking place. This consisted of a photographic survey, measured survey, trenches to establish the stability of the structure and interpret it's development, recovering fallen masonry, and dismantling sections of unstable walls to enable them to be reconstructed using the correct sequence of stones. Three exploratory trenches were excavated in the upper surface of the Platform, behind the parapet wall towards the rear of the structure. These were positioned at the north-west and south angles and central position of the platform. The trenches revealed evidence of the Tudor sub-structure and a 17th century wall, together with features relating to the remodelling of the gun emplacements in 1860. It was felt that the latter could be restored to return the upper part of the platform to its 1860 state. Where possible fallen masonry was recovered and re-used, although some original stonework had been lost at sea. Material from the Purbeck quarries was used to replace the masonry which had been lost. The exterior of the platform was returned to its pre-1987 appearance, while the structure was strengthened internally with tie-rods to hold a 17th century wall in position.
