Event/Activity EPM156 - Archaeological Desk-Based Assessment British Gas Site Portfield Road, Portsmouth
Technique(s)
Date
1998
Organisation
Wessex Archaeology
Description
Wessex Archaeology produced a desk-based assessment for the former British Gas Site at Portfield Road in 1998. The study area measured 1km in diameter. Various sources were consulted, including those held by the Hampshire County SMR, the Portsmouth City SMR, and the Local Studies collection at Portsmouth Central Library. There were no archaeological find spots recorded within the study area itself, although archaeology dating from the Palaeolithic to Modern periods had been recovered from the wider area around the site, the details of which are included in the report.
The desk-based assessment concluded that the site had little known archaeological potential, and that the removal of contaminated material had caused damage to a considerable depth. It was considered that any archaeological works on the site would require, at most, the reporting and inspection of any discoveries during redevelopment (watching brief).
