Event/Activity EPM157 - Archaeological Desk-Based Assessment, Tipner, Portsmouth

A desk-based assessment was produced by Wessex Archaeology in 2007 on behalf of the Tipner Regeneration Company. The study area covered approximately 22ha and was centred on SU 64000 03250. The report concluded that the cultural resource of the site was defined by the extent of the remains of the Tipner magazine on Tipnor point, the surviving structures of which include four listed buildings. Although no archaeological sites/find spots had been recorded within the study area, the presence of well documented archaeology in Langstone Harbour and Portchester dating from the prehistoric to modern period suggested there was the potential for similar material to be present at Tipner. However, the survival of any remains and the potential for their recovery, would have been significantly affected by modern construction on the site, land reclimation/made ground, contamination and drainage. It was therefore felt that further intrusive archaeological investigations were unlikely to be nessessary. Accession No: 2014/290
