Description
A watching brief was carried out by English Heritage's Central Archaeology Service (now the Centre for Archaeology) on five tree holes excavated in the garden of No.1, The Parade Garden, Portsmouth Dockyard between 20th July and October 1992. The CAS were also requested to photographically record buildings due to be demolished as part of a redevelopment of the area of the Dockyard bounded by Queen's Road, Samson Road and The Parade. The work was requested by the Inspector of Ancient Monuments for the Royal Dockyards.
The five tree holes ranged in depth between 0.5m x 0.5m x 0.4m and 2m x 1.5m x 0.75m.They were excavated following the removal of a covering layer of 100mm of concrete. The archaeological sequence that was revealed represented the remains of flower beds and paths.
A photographic recording was carried out on the buildings that were due to be demolished, and the contractors were advised as to which architectural fragments to retain. The demolition commenced on the 5th October, but the photographic coverage was limited due to problems getting cameras into the Dockyard. The report records that: 'the only notes to survive from the photographic recording of the building for demolition are the photographic records and no notes or photographs were taken during demolition'.
The report/archive does not contain a location/site plan for either the watching brief or demolition.
