Event/Activity EPM169 - Excavation at Royal Naval sports ground, HMS Temeraire Swimming Pool
Technique(s)
Date
1985
Organisation
Portsmouth Museum Service
Description
Evidence of the 18th Portsmouth and Portsea defences was revealed during excavations for a new swimming pool (HMS Temeraire) near the junction of Burnaby Road and Cambridge in 1985. The only source currently available is a report in the Evening News for 7th October 1985. It is unclear whether this was an excavation/evaluation/watching brief carried out by the museum service for development control purposes, or a chance find by workmen. The Portsmouth Museum Service Curator of Archaeology, Russell Fox, is quoted in the article.
