Event/Activity EPM18 - Spur Redoubt

The remains of Spur Redoubt were exposed during urban redevelopment work in 1988. The redoubt had been demolished and backfilled in 1930 when the seafront promenade was extended across the area. During restoration work a modern car park surface was removed and the backfilled features of the Spur were excavated, cleaned and recorded. The remaining masonry exposed during the work was 2m high. It was thought that a further 2m of the superstructure had been lost when the redoubt was demolished. The masonry was well preserved but some of the upper surfaces had been disrupted by modern drainage systems. A timber bridge across the moat had been built in 1976. The features exposed during the restoration work remain on display to the public in situ.
