Event/Activity EPM180 - Archaeological Watching Brief for the Portsmouth Flood Alleviation Scheme Gruneisen Road, Portsmouth
Technique(s)
Date
2013
Organisation
Archaeology South East
Description
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Archaeology South-East during groundworks for the Portsmouth flood alleviation scheme in Gruneisen Road in 2013. The mechanical excavation of a 12.5m wide circular shaft was monitored to a depth of c. 4m below ground level. The watching brief was terminated at this stage with the agreement of the archaeology advisor to Portsmouth City Council, as it was thought unlikely that archaeologically significant deposits would be present below this depth.
Due to health and safety concerns the excavation was monitored from ground level. Close inspection of the spoil for archaeological artefacts was not possible, as it was either dropped into a bunded container, or loaded directly into lorries. No archaeological features of finds were revealed during the watching brief.
