Event/Activity EPM21 - Portsdown Hill II

Investigation of several Iron Age features exposed in section during the widening of Gillman Road, Portsdown Hill, in 1965. An area 36.6m long by 2m wide was observed, but the site could not be excavated due to the thickness of the topsoil cover. The investigation revealed evidence of shifting field boundaries and a change in land use during the Iron Age period. Features consisted of a sequence of overlapping lynchets, a boundary bank and two ditches. The unusually thick topsoil cover, up to 1.5m in places, meant that early plough levels had not be disturbed by modern agricultural. The site is known as Portsdown II.
