Event/Activity EPM213 - Milton Common Coastal Defence Scheme Archaeological Watching Brief

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) during coastal defence work at Milton Common between 25th April and 8th June 2016. Archaeological monitoring consisted of observations carried out in a trench along the sea wall, a soil strip to the west of the sea wall and the demolition of a pier. The trench along the sea wall measured 30m long x 1.60m wide x 2.50m deep, and ran along a stretch of wall between the south end of the concrete wall and a monument opposite Frog Lake known as 'The Peoples' Monument. Due to flooding, it was not possible to make observations during the demolition of the pier structure, and only a redeposited chalky rubble infill was noted on the spoil heap. Although monitored, groundworks inland to the west of the sea wall did not expose the base of the topsoil in this area. The earliest deposit encountered on the site was natural clay at approximately 1m OD. No archaeological features or deposits were recorded. Accession No: 2016/201
