Description

In October 2016, Cotswold Archaeology was commissioned to provide an historic building record of the former HMP Kingston, Milton Road, Portsmouth, centred at NGR SU 65952 00836. The record was carried out to Level 2 as defined by current Historic England guidance to fulfil a condition of Listed Building Consent to convert the building into (optional) residential accommodation. The prison was built in 1876-1877. The purpose of the work was to record any original features and character of the prison building that would otherwise be lost through development. Recording in each wing was limited to a representative 20% sample of spaces and structural elements due to the repetitive nature of the design. Additional elements of interest were recorded in more detail e.g. graffiti and signage. Museum Accession No: 2017/59
