Event/Activity EPM223 - Archaeological Watching Brief, Milldam Nursery, Burnaby Road
Technique(s)
Date
2009
Organisation
Wessex Archaeology
Description
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Wessex Archaeology during groundworks on land at the Milldam Nursery, Burnaby Road, between 25th August and 7th September 2009. The groundworks were associated with the building of a new nursery to replace a temporary building. The Grade II listed 19th century Portsea Free School adjoined the site to the north-east. The monitoring work took place within the footprint of the new nursery. The groundworks were excavated under constant archaeological supervision using a small mechanical digger. All excavated material was inspected for artefacts.
The groundworks were not deep enough to extend beyond the modern levels, and no archaeological features or deposits were recorded. Archaeology may survive in situ beneath the modern levels.
