Event/Activity EPM224 - Geoarchaeological Watching Brief North Portsea Island Coastal Flood and Erosion Risk Management Scheme

A geoarchaeological watching brief was carried out by Wessex Archaeology on geotechnical work relating to Phase 1 of the North Portsea Island Coastal Flood and Erosion Risk Management Scheme (CFERMS) between the 18th and 29th August 2014. The work comprised the monitoring and assessment of six boreholes, six window samples and fourteen trial pits taken in the Flood Cell 4 part of the scheme. The boreholes were excavated using a 150mm stainless steel lead length to a maximum depth of 20m. The window samples and trial pits were excavated by hand prior to drilling to a depth of 5m and 1.5m respectively. No material of potential archaeological interest was recorded within any of the core logs taken on site. No obvious soil horizons, such as peat deposits, were recorded and therefore no samples were retained for palaeoenvironmental assessment or analysis. However, it was recommended that any further geotechnical work should be monitored by a geoarchaeologist, as there was the potential for the survival of archaeological/palaeoenvironmental material elsewhere across the site. 2017/74
