Description

A watching brief was carried out by Gifford and Partners on the excavation of four trial pits in the old Royal Marine Infirmary building at Gunwharf Quays on the 28th August 1998. The pits were excavated in order examine the foundations ahead of structural work on the building. Holes were cut in the floorboards and the pits dug by hand prior to being inspected and recorded by an archaeologist. Archaeological monitoring was carried as the Infirmary building is a Scheduled Monument and had been constructed straddling the Redan in the Sea Line defences and the south east corner of New Gunwharf. Part of the Sea Line wall and a stone built arch were observed in two of the trial pits. No archaeological features or finds were recorded in the remaining two pits.
