Description

Historic England carried out a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey at the Royal Garrison Church on the 28th April 2021. The survey covered an area of about 15m by 10m in both the outer and inner nave within the immediate vicinity of a known brick vault beneath the choir screen separating the outer nave from the main church. The survey was undertaken in advance of work to replace the choir screen above the vault with the aim of locating and defining known and recorded vaults and graves to avoid damage by heavy plant during the repairs. The results of the survey suggested the vault did not extend east beyond the porch but may continue into the inner nave. Other anomalies that were identified corresponded to known graves, vaults and access points. The presence of several unrecorded graves was also suggested by the survey.
