Event/Activity EPM26 - HM Naval Dockyard- Vospers Site

Archaeological watching brief undertaken during the construction of new ship halls. The old sea wall was located in the area to the west of the dry dock 13 in a pile cap trench, composed of large square limestone blocks bonded with a pale creamy-white lime mortar. It was L-shaped in plan and continued eastwards and possible westwards under the existing ground surface. Two other limestone walls, one on an east west alignment, the other possibly running parallel with it were recorded at the western end of the Steel Production Hall in the dockyard. They are part of the Unicorn Ravelin, a triangular detached work which stood in the ditch, in front of the curtain wall of the Portsea town defences. They may possibly be walls flanking the roadway through the Ravelin to the Unicorn gate.
