Event/Activity EPM263 - Archaeological watching brief at Fort Widley

Wessex Archaeology carried out an archaeological watching brief at Fort Widley on the 7th February 2022 during the digging of a trench to install a fibreoptic cable. The work was commissioned as a condition of Scheduled Monument Consent and Listed Building Consent. Archaeological monitoring took place on a single trench measuring 0.6m x 0.28m x 0.3m located on the eastern side of the barracks at the front of the fort. Three layers of 19th and 20th century building material and foundations relating to the construction of the fort were observed. No archaeological features or finds were observed during the watching brief. As the natural geology was not reached in the trench it is possible that archaeological remains may be present below the recorded deposits, if any survived the construction of the fort.
