Event/Activity EPM27 - Archaeological Watching Brief at Chedworth Crescent, Paulsgrove

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken on the site of the former garages to the rear of 34-60, Chedworth Crescent, Paulsgrove, Portsmouth. No archaeology was observed during the groundworks on this site. Probably due to the result of extensive cut and filled operations that seem to have taken place to level the site when housing was built around Chedworth Crescent after the Second World War. The area remained agricultural fields until the early 1930s. On the south side of the site, disturbance continued to a depth of over 2.5m. This had resulted in a large, partly buried revetment wall being built to prevent soils on the site from slumping into the gardens of houses to the south.
