Description

An archaeological evaluation was carried out by West Sussex Archaeology at Fraser Range, Eastney, between the 19th and 21st June 2023 in relation to a planning application for a proposed redevelopment which included land falling within the Fort Cumberland Scheduled Monument. Historic England advised that an archaeological field evaluation take place within that part of the scheduled area which lay within the proposed development site. The archaeological evaluation consisted of two trenches which were targeted to investigate possible below ground remains of earlier fortifications pre-dating the present Fort Cumberland (built 1782-1812) and assess the potential for buried prehistoric land surfaces. The evaulation did not identify any archaeological remains or features pre-dating the existing sea wall which appears to have been built after 1947.
