Event/Activity EPM275 - Archaeological Monitoring at Hilsea Lines, Portsmouth, Hampshire

A programme of archaeological monitoring and recording was carried out by Allen Archaeology Limited during the realignment of an electricity cable in the area of Hilsea Lines between the 15th and 17th January 2018 as a condition of Scheduled Monument Consent. The work was centred on NGR SU6587 0438, off Scott Road and Peronne Road. Monitoring took place on groundworks to divert the route of an existing cable which ran over the embankment and outer ditch of the Scheduled Monument to the roadway and footpath adjacent to the monument. The redundant cable was to be left in situ. Groundworks were excavated by a mechanical excavator to depths between 1m and 1.4m below ground level. No finds, features or deposits of archaeological significance were recorded. Modern dumps of chalk and brick rubble were thought to represent levelling layers associated with the construction of Peronne Road and an adjacent footbridge during the 20th century.
