Event/Activity EPM276 - Archaeological Watching Brief Fort Cumberland Coastal Defence Renewal Scheme Portsmouth

An archaeological watching brief was carried out by Archaeology South-East on groundworks associated with the Fort Cumberland Coastal Defence Renewal Scheme in May and June 2017. Archaeological monitoring took place during the remodelling of existing partially-destroyed concrete sea defences and mechanical excavations associated with the creation of new defences. It was possible to examine the surface of the underlying deposits during the remodelling of the existing defences, but close monitoring and examination of the excavations for the new defences was not possible due to health and safety concerns. No significant archaeological finds, features or deposits were recorded during the watching brief.
