Description

Wessex Archaeology carried out an archaeological watching brief during demolition and construction works in Sub Frontage 5 West of the Southsea Coastal Defence Scheme between 7th December 2023 and 23rd February 2024. The work was commissioned by Coastal Partners and Portsmouth City Council and formed part of a wider series of archaeological monitoring for the Southsea Coastal Defence Scheme. The watching brief monitored ground works associated with the removal of failing sea defences, the instalment of new defences, and upgraded street furniture along Southsea promenade between the Pyramids Centre and Speakers Corner. The majority of the works were concentrated along the promenade, with monitoring also taking place on a trench adjacent to Clarence Esplanade and a trench along the southern edge of Southsea Rock Gardens. No archaeology was recorded during the watching brief. Museum Accession No: 2020/51/5.
