Description

Wessex Archaeology carried out an Historic England Level 3 (analytical) historic building record at the Round Tower, Old Portsmouth on the 3rd July 2025. The work was commissioned by Coastal Partners on behalf of Portsmouth City Council to support an application for Scheduled Monument Consent for future repair works. The historic building recording was limited to the lower coastal frontage of the tower and included analytical inspection and photography of the exterior and photogrammetric survey. The latter was used to produce orthographic external elevations and a plan that were later annotated and chronologically phased. The recording was divided into three locations: the lower part of the curved elevation (Location 1); retaining wall to the platform now supporting the restaurant terrace (Location 2); late-19th century searchlight emplacement (Location 3). The Wessex Archaeology report, which includes documentary research, should be consulted for the full details and results of the survey.
