Description
An archaeological watching brief was carried out by Gifford and Partners Ltd during re-anchoring of the quay wall at a development site at 42-46 Broad Street in 2002. Three trial pits were excavated by a mechanical digger before the work commenced. Cobbles were noted in the westernmost pit, but no archaeology was observed in the remaining two. Work on the site was carried out in two phases: excavation of anchor wall; excavation of pile caps.
A number of features of interest were identified during the watching brief; a series of limestone blocks believed to be remnants of the earlier quay wall, the cellar walls of a late eighteenth or early nineteenth century building and two cobble surfaces believed to be contemporary with this red brick structure.
