Event/Activity EPM40 - Archaeological Watching Brief at the Former Johnson & Johnson Site, Paulsgrove, Portsmouth

Disturbed and relatively mixed deposits from ground surface down to directly above the natural gravel in the wall trench sections was observed. This suggests that, for the most part, the Southern area of the site would have been affected by 1940s levelling associated with the construction of Government Harbour Board buildings. It is possible that 'pockets' or small areas of archaeological deposits survived modern construction levelling at the southern edge of the site, it was in this area that Iron Age/Romano-Britsh artefacts were discovered in 1980, but it would appear overall, that modern levelling construction has left few areas undisturbed.
