Event/Activity EPM41 - Archaeological Deskbased Assessment The John Pounds Centre Portsea

Deskbased assessment for three sites comprising the John Pounds Centre in Portsea proposed for redevelopment. The site lies within the historic centre of the town of Portsea, which grew up at the beginning of the 18th century. As there were no firm development proposals when the report was written, it does not consider any potential impact on the archaeological resource. Site One (SU463516 100392) Majority of site occupied by 'Delaval House' (council housing block) and The Blue Anchor public house, both dating to the second half of the 20th century. There is little remaining open ground, and thererfore quite limited potential for surviving archaeology. Site Two (SU463505 100285) Occupied by two parts of the John Pounds Centre and a derelict pub (late19th - early 20th century). The western block of the John Pounds Centre is a converted Victorian school, and an amalgamation of various 19th and 20th century structures. The eastern block is largely 20th century buildings. There is an area of hard standing a little over 800m sqaure between the buildings. Good potential for archaeological survival. Site Three (SU463642 100362) A little east of sites one and two, in the area of the former mill pond. Large area of hard standing a little over 1000m sqaure, and a single storey late 20th century structure. As this is the only site with a substantial area of open land, in theory, it has the best potential for surviving archaeology. However, it was thought unlikely that there would be any significant archaeology in the area. Conclusion It was thought that there was some potential for the survival of Post-Medieval archaeology in the area of site two, and limited survival on site one. Site three is outside the area of the earliest development of Portsea.
