Event/Activity EPM7 - Camber Bastion

Portsmouth Museum Service carried out observations at the site of the former 17th century Camber Bastion during redevelopment work in 1988. Earlier redevelopment work had removed all trace of the structure above ground, but archaeological evidence was thought to survive below ground level. The redevelopment work involved the removal of a modern surface of concrete laid over brick rubble. Below this major sections of the bastion wall were exposed, together with substantial red-brick footings of an early-18th century garrison powder-magazine which had been incorporated into the bastion. The magazine footings were broken up and removed by the developer's contractors. However, the remains of the bastion walls were left in situ below ground level.
