Event/Activity EPM73 - Summary report on an archaeological watching brief at 101 - 115 Kingston Road, Portsmouth
Technique(s)
Date
2004
Organisation
Southern Archaeological Services Ltd
Description
Archaeological watching brief carried out during the redevelopment of the former Haskers store on Kingston Road. Observations took place during the excavation of geotechnical test-pits, the grubbing-out of foundations during development and the excavation of foundation trenches and some services.
The watching brief revealed that natural deposits had been relatively undisturbed by development on the site over the last 200 years. Any levelling that had taken place had not been servere enough to remove much of the uppermost natural deposits, which were overlayed by modern rubble. Three 19th century brick lined wells and a cellar were recorded, but no stratified deposits predating the 19th century survive. Residual finds of medieval and post-medieval date were recovered.
