Description
A series of watching briefs were carried out on groundworks associated with the installation of underground cabling and pop-up power points at Southsea Castle bandstand. The work was conducted in two phases. During phase one a long cable trench 140m long, 400mm wide and 500mm deep was dug. This ran from pillar post JT03 down to and around the bandstand to JT04, and two new pillar posts. Phase Two involved the re-routing of an existing electric cable to connect to the feeder pillar. A third phase to install a lighting system encircling the embankment of Bandstand was postponed for a year.
No features or finds dating before the Modern period were observed or recovered, and concrete blocks were found in the embankment surrounding the bandstand.
