Event/Activity EPM88 - Archaeological evaluation excavation on the site of the proposed Building 1, North Campus, University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Archaeological evaluation carried out by Southampton Archaeology Unit in August 2006 on the site of the proposed Building 1, North Campus, University of Portsmouth. A trial trench 16.5m long, up to 3m deep and 2m wide on an approximately west-north-west to east-south-east orientation, was excavated in order to determine the nature of the archaeology within the proposed development area. The trench was aligned so that it should have been roughly perpendicular to the line of the 18th century rampart as shown on early maps and plotted onto the modern topography. The evaluation revealed that a number of the components of the Portsea Lines survived below ground. These consisted of the moat, stone revetment to the moat, stone revertment to the earth rampart, and a stone structure in the rampart (perhaps a buttress to the face). Accession number 2006/1162
