Event/Activity EPM89 - Archaeological watching brief at Victoria Road North, Portsmouth

Watching brief carried out in association with the construction of new housing units at Victoria Road North, Portsmouth. A total of 38 trenches were dug, four of which were test trenches (1, 2, 3 & 6) and one (number 35) was for a crane base. The remaining trenches were for foundations. The earliest archaeological evidence consisted of deposits containing mortar and brick fragments, and a cobbled surface. These deposits probably belonged to scattered buildings shown on pre-19th century maps. 18th/19th century bricks re-used in later 19th century walls may have been re-cycled from these earlier houses. It was not possible to distinguish the plans of the earlier buildings, due to 19th century development on the site of terraced housing with cellars. Accession number 2007/13
