Event/Activity EPM92 - Watching brief at the Nuffield Sports Hall, Cambridge Road, Portsmouth, Hants

Southampton Archaeology Unit carried out a watching brief on the groundworks for an extension to the University of Portsmouth Nuffield Sports Hall, Cambridge Road, between the 7th July and the 8th August 2005. Archaeological monitoring was required as the site lay within the area of the Amhurst Redoubt, which formed part of the late 18th century Portsea line on defences. During the watching brief monitoring took place on the machine excavation of groundworks, including ground beam trenches and foundation bases. The work revealed part of the stone foundations of the Amhurst Redoubt and deposits possibly relating to the moat. Accession number 2005/631
