Monument MPM1017 - Clarence Barracks

Military barracks built in the 1890s and demolished in the 1960s/70s. Part of the site became the Duchess of Kent Barracks when Wrens were stationed there after the Second World War. The only remaining buildings relating to the barracks are the City Museum and Old Records building. The majority of the site is now a housing estate (Pembroke Park). An earlier post-medieval barracks (also called Clarence Barracks) originally stood on part of the site.

Much of the barracks complex was demolished to make way for the Pembroke Park estate in the 1960s/1970s. The current City Museum is the only substantial surviving building.

The barrack blocks at the south western corner of the complex were built on part of the site of the 19th century Borough Gaol. Evidence of these buildings, including the gaol, was discovered during a watching brief at Portsmouth Grammar School in 1995. A number of brick walls, a concrete slab, rubble and an archway were believed to have belonged to the barracks.
