Monument MPM1021 - Travellers Joy Public House

Post-medieval/modern features and finds recorded during a watching brief on the site of the Traveller's Joy Public House in 2006. Two soakaways, a brick surface and the construction trench for a garage were recorded. A small number of finds, including one fragment of 18th/19th century pottery and several fragments of clay pipe, were recovered from post-medieval/modern layers.

Post-medieval/modern features and finds recorded during a watching brief on the site of the Traveller's Joy Public House in 2006. These mainly related to two soakaways and the construction of a garage. A fragment of pottery (1760-1840) and fragments of clay pipe, brick and glass were recovered from post-medieval/early-modern layers.

Two uncertain post-medieval layers were observed on the site. One layer contained fragments of chalk and a fragment of post-medieval/early-modern brick. The other contained fragments of brick and a fragment of glass, all of which were post-medieval/early-modern in date. This layer was cut by the construction trench for a garage.

A fragment of transfer-printed china dated 1760-1840, and two fragments of clay tobacco pipe dating to the 19th/early-20th century were recovered from an early-modern layer at the northern end of the site.

Two soakaways were revealed during the excavation. The first soakaway contained several fills, one of which consisted of modern bricks. The second soakaway contained a fill of modern bricks arranged in a circular pattern which were bonded by mortar.

A brick surface, 0.04m from ground level and 0.07m thick was cut by the two soakaways and a construction trench for a garage. The bricks dated from 1850 onwards.

The construction trench for the garage was 27.2m long, 6m wide and 0.6m deep. The foundations were built of brick and concrete. The fill contained fragments of clay tobacco pipe which were dated to the late-19th/20th century.

Unstratified finds consisted of a 19th or 20th century peg tile. Much of the site had been disturbed by modern building work.
