Monument MPM1075 - 149 Kingston Road

Brick foundations of late-19th/early-20th century terraced housing, cellars and a 20th century house revealed during an archaeological watching brief in 2004.

A watching brief in 2004 revealed evidence of the brick foundations of late 19th/early 20th century terraced housing, and a later recently demolished structure known as Stirling House. The terraced housing had been demolished by 1937 (as shown on the 1937 OS map), and the site reveloped as Stirling House after this date. Recent brick foundations were uncovered along the Stirling Street frontage of the site.

Evidence of brick foundations associated with a cellar were revealed towards the Kingston Road frontage of the site. A more extensive cellared area measuring 5.65m wide at the south western edge of the site was possibly associated with 'Percy House', a building recorded on the 1870 OS map.

It is possible that the historic farmstead of Swann Farm extended into the very northern edge of the site. The only evidence for this was a possible yard surface made from imported chalk, possibly belonging to a late 18th/19th century phase of the Farm. No artefacts earlier than occasional 19th century ceramics were observed.
