Monument MPM1082 - 35-37 Claremont Road, Portsmouth

Observations made during a watching brief at the site in 2004. A large semi-cellar, measuring 10m long x 8m wide and about 0.5 m deep, occupied the centre of the site. The cellar dated to the 19th or 20th centuries, had brick walls and was filled with late 20th century material and modern bricks. This fill probably derived from the demolition of the cellar and its superstructure. Two layers of dark soil with charcoal and shell inclusions may have represented medieval Fratton, but no certain dating evidence was recovered. Since most of the site was disturbed by modern building work, no definite conclusions could be made.
