Monument MPM1085 - Town Mill Pond, New Business School, University of Portsmouth

A layer of dark organic silt, interpreted as silt from the former Town Mill Pond, recorded during an archaeological watching brief in 2002. The Mill Pond was infilled between 1790 and 1838.

A watching brief in 2002 revealed a layer of dark silt, up to 1m deep in places, containing occasional 19th century ceramics. This was interpreted as silt from the former Town Mill Pond, the northern arm of which once covered the development site. This had been infilled sometime between 1790 and 1838. The earliest reference to the mill is thought to have been in the 12th century.
