Full Description
A watching brief at the site of 9 St James' Street in 2001/2 recorded evidence that the site had previously been situated within the north-western inlet to the large tidal mill pond to the King's/Beeston's Mill, known as The Mill Pond. This section of the pond is marked on maps from the 16th to the late-18th century. It was represented by alluvial or marine deposits containing 18th century pottery, presumed to have been lost when the pond was still open. Layers of infill above these deposits containing early-mid 19th century pottery confirmed the cartographic evidence that the pond had been infilled during this period.
Brick foundations observed on the site were thought to relate to a two-storey Victorian house.
