Monument MPM1091 - Qinetiq, Portsdown Technology Park

A shallow feature of uncertain date and function and a 19th/20th century deposit were recorded during a watching brief in 2006. Finds including a burnt flint, a fragment of Purbeck stone, 19th century brick and tile, 19th and 20th century bottle glass and pottery were recovered from modern topsoil.

A shallow feature of uncertain date and function had been cut into the natural chalk. This measured at least 0.54m x 0.40m x 0.13m deep and had one fill of a slightly stony silty loam. A 19th/20th century soil layer contained a ceramic fragment, probably from a fireback. A 0.33m thick clay layer of uncertain date above the natural chalk was probably topsoil. Modern contexts were also observed. A layer of modern topsoil present in all trenches contained material including a burnt flint, a fragment of Purbeck stone, 19th century brick and tile, 19th and 20th century bottle glass and pottery. No finds predating the 19th century were recovered.
