Monument MPM1138 - Fort James

17th century fort designed by de Gomme, completed c.1678/9. Fort james consisted of a tower about 46 feet square and about 19 feet high on Burrow/Rat Island. The roof of the tower was built to accommodate guns, and also had a parapet and sentry boxes at the corners. Outside was a platform about 110 feet square with another parapet. Admiral Sir George Byng noted in 1707/8 that the Fort was in poor condition, and in 1742 an order was issued that the two guns there be returned to store. The fort was a ruin by 1800 and was partly demolished in 1827. However, it is likely that below-ground archaeological remains of the fort survive.
